LingoAce is an online learning platform that remotely connects the best teachers to learners around the world across multiple subjects. Though virtual, the connection between our students and teachers is very real.
For a special group of students, this connection has deepened.
Earlier this year, we learned that many of our student’s families would be traveling to China over the summer for the first time in years. We thought this would be a wonderful opportunity for us to host a meetup with their teachers to give them some face-to-face time.
After many months of planning and preparation, we hosted our first teacher-student meetup in our Beijing office on July 14. Here are the highlights of that day:
Guess who: Are you my teacher?
To help break the ice and work through any nerves, we played a game with our students. Each teacher wore a mask to cover half of their face. We then asked students to find their teachers. Many were able to recognize their expressions, gestures, and voices!

Taking a cultural tour of Beijing
Over the summer, we’ve been hosting small group classes covering various aspects of Chinese culture and history. We brought those classes to life at this meetup, giving our students a chance to learn about the rich cultural history of Beijing. It was also a great opportunity for our parents to experience our approach to teaching. We covered iconic places like the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace. We concluded the event with a tasting of Beijing’s famous roast duck — yum!
Experiencing the art of tea
We taught our students about Chinese culture and etiquette through a Chinese tea ceremony, which is based on a deep respect for our elders. Our teacher guided the students and their families through the steps of brewing tea, appreciating its aroma, and savoring its taste. Though this may seem like a small gesture, the next step is offering a cup to their parents and grandparents as a sign of respect and gratitude. It was heartwarming for many of us to see kids do this on their own without any instruction or prompting.

Our first teacher-student meetup was an absolute blast. We had a wonderful time meeting our students and their families. As a team, we wanted to make this event fun, worthwhile, and educational. As our co-founder and a teacher herself, Gloria Xu, shared during the event, “learners first” is a core value at LingoAce. We believe our students’ time is precious and that we want to do our best to make sure they get the most out of their learning experience with us.
