Long ago, in ancient China, there was a brave king named King Goujian of the Yue Kingdom. His country, Yue, and the neighboring state of Wu were engaged in constant warfare. Despite numerous battles, Yue suffered repeated defeats, and eventually, it was conquered by the Wu Kingdom.

The king of Wu was King Fuchai, a very arrogant ruler who not only sought victory but also aimed to completely subjugate the Yue Kingdom. Therefore, King Fuchai gave King Goujian two choices: either live forever in Wu, leading a humble life, or choose death.

King Goujian, unwilling to die, chose to stay in Wu, but this decision was far from easy. He and his wife were forced to live a harsh life, wearing tattered clothes, tending to horses, and cleaning dust every day, living a life similar to servants. Their days were extremely tough, but King Goujian did not forget his mission. He adopted a unique way to motivate himself. In winter, he slept hugging ice blocks, and in the scorching summer, he relied on charcoal fires to cool down. More surprisingly, he hung a giant gallbladder by his bedside and personally licked a bit of gall every day. Everyone knows how bitter gall is; biting into a fish's gall is excruciating.

All of this was to remind himself, to remember the pain his country and people had suffered. King Goujian engraved this pain in his memory, knowing that only through persistent efforts could he achieve his goal and seek revenge for his country. After years of difficult living, King Goujian not only did not forget the national humiliation but also worked hard to develop the Yue Kingdom's economic and military strength. Eventually, Yue transformed from a weak state into a powerful one. At that time, King Fuchai of Wu felt ashamed and regretful, and in the end, with the Yue forces at the city gates, King Fuchai took his own life.
