Welcome, kids, to LingoAce Story Time! Today, Teacher Xiaoyu is going to tell you a fable about "一鸣惊人" (startling the world with a single brilliant feat).

The Meaning of "一鸣惊人"

First, let's understand the idiom "一鸣惊人." In pinyin, it is "yī míng jīng rén." It metaphorically describes a situation where there is no outstanding performance initially, but suddenly, there is an astonishing achievement.

Let the story begin!

Alright, let's get into the story of "一鸣惊人." Today, I've prepared two anecdotes for you, kids. Are you ready? This might be a bit lengthy, so buckle up!

The story of "一鸣惊人" has two historical sources, both from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. One version attributes it to King Zhuang of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period, while another version associates it with King Wei of Qi during the Warring States period.

Anecdote One: From King Zhuang of Chu

Recorded in "Han Feizi · Yulao": "Even without flying, it will soar to the sky; even without singing, it will startle the world." In "Han Feizi · Yulao," it is documented that King Zhuang of Chu ruled the government for three years without issuing any decrees or achieving any political accomplishments. Right Marshal Wu Ju approached the king and delivered a subtle message, saying, "There is a bird perched on the southern Fu Mountain, motionless, not spreading its wings, not flying, and not singing. It remains silent, what kind of bird is this?"

King Zhuang of Chu replied, "For three years, it hasn't spread its wings to grow feathers; it doesn't fly or sing to observe the people's attitudes. Although it hasn't flown yet, when it does, it will soar to the sky; even though it hasn't sung yet, when it does, it will startle the world. Rest assured, I understand." After six months, King Zhuang personally attended to the government, abolishing ten decrees and implementing nine others. He executed five corrupt officials, promoted six reclusive scholars, and, as a result, the country underwent significant reforms.

He led troops to conquer the Qi state, defeated the Qi army in Xuzhou, triumphed over the Jin army in Heyong, and gathered the vassals in the Song state. Ultimately, he made Chu the hegemon of the world. King Zhuang did not harm loyal and virtuous people over minor issues, earning him a good reputation. Without prior displays, he achieved remarkable feats. This story illustrates that individuals with great talent often succeed later, and substantial achievements are often immeasurable.

King Zhuang of Chu, the son of King Mu of Chu, was one of the most accomplished monarchs in the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period and one of the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn period. Before King Zhuang, Chu was largely excluded from Central Plains culture. However, King Zhuang proclaimed hegemony over the Central Plains, making Chu powerful and renowned. His achievements played a role in the unification of China and the formation of national spirit. King Zhuang ruled from 613 BCE to 591 BCE, a total of 23 years, and later generations held him in high esteem. Anecdotes about him, such as "一鸣惊人" (startling the world with a single brilliant feat), became fixed idioms, leaving a profound impact on later generations.

Legend 2: From King Wei of Qi

"The Records of the Grand Historian · Biographies of Humorous Characters" records: "This bird, when not flying, remains ordinary; once it takes flight, it soars to the sky. When not singing, it remains ordinary; once it sings, it startles the world."

King Wei of Qi was the ruler of the Qi state during the Warring States period (Qi State of the Tian family). After ascending to the throne, King Wei achieved success, winning the Battle of Guiling against the Wei army and securing victory. However, after these achievements, King Wei indulged in pleasures and neglected state affairs.

This behavior led neighboring states to invade Qi, causing turmoil within the country. Eventually, a senior official advised King Wei, using a metaphorical approach to persuade him. The official described a bird in the royal palace that, for several years, neither flew nor sang. He asked King Wei about this bird's nature.

Understanding the implied message, King Wei replied, "This bird, when not flying, remains ordinary; once it takes flight, it soars to the sky. When not singing, it remains ordinary; once it sings, it startles the world." Following this advice, King Wei focused on governance, leading to the rapid development of Qi and its dominance in the eastern region of the Central Plains.

Question time!

The story is complete, and now it's time for a question for the little ones~ The question is: Do the kids know what lesson this story teaches us?

And here's the answer~

"One Stroke Amazes" tells us that it's not necessary to constantly show off to demonstrate our abilities. Those who are quiet and unassuming but can achieve remarkable feats at crucial moments are truly wise.

Lesson: King Zhuang, by not interfering in state affairs and not exploiting the people, maintained a good reputation. By not displaying his talents prematurely, he was able to achieve remarkable success. Therefore, the story teaches us that "we should be good at accepting others' opinions to make ourselves stronger, and we should be good at observing and summarizing. Even if we don't stand out in ordinary times, once we seize the opportunity, we will surely achieve remarkable results."

Source of the Story

"One Stroke Amazes" (pinyin: yīmíng jīngrén) is an idiom derived from a fable. The earliest reference to this idiom can be found in the book "Han Feizi" in the section titled "Yulao." It is also mentioned in the "Records of the Grand Historian" (Shi Ji) in the section on humorous biographies (滑稽列传).
