Learn Chinese

The Dragon Boat Festival is a Chinese summer festival. Along with the Lunar New Year in the spring and the Moon Festival in the fall, this is one of the most common traditional holidays celebrated by the Chinese diaspora outside of China. In Chinese, this festival is called duān wǔ jié (端午节). It is traditionally celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar.

When is the Dragon Boat Festival 2024?

In 2024, the Dragon Boat Festival takes place on June 10 on the Gregorian calendar. Because this holiday is based on the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, the date varies yearly, typically in late May or June. While the festival is celebrated on the proper date in China, celebrations outside China can vary, often occurring throughout the summer.

Dragon Boat Festival: History and Legend

The Dragon Boat Festival dates back to China's first emperor, who established the Qin Dynasty. China comprised various regional kingdoms during what was known as the Warring States period (475–221 BC). The legend of the Dragon Boat Festival is tied to the famous patriotic poet Qu Yuan (屈原). He was a minister for the state of Chu (楚国) and was deeply loved by the people for his wisdom and loyalty. He devoted his entire life to assisting the King in making the Chu stronger.

One of his most important ideas was to unify the equally powerful Qi State to combat the most powerful Qin State at the time. However, a group of nobles envious of Qu Yuan frequently disparaged him before the King. Qu Yuan was eventually forced out of the capital and exiled to the countryside. During his exile, he composed many poems to express his love for his homeland, some of which are still popular in China.

When the Qin army invaded the Chu's capital in 278 B.C., Qu Yuan was both heartbroken and outraged. In his despair, he plunged himself into the Miluo River (Mìluó Jiāng, 汨罗江) and died for his country.

The local people, who admired Qu Yuan, rushed to the river in their boats to search for his body. They beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles to scare away fish and evil spirits. To honor him and ensure the fish did not devour his body, they threw rice dumplings (zongzi, 粽子) into the river. This effort to save Qu Yuan eventually became the annual Dragon Boat Festival.

How It Is Celebrated in China

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with various traditional activities that vary by region, but several customs are universally observed throughout China. Every year, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar, people often gather outside riverbanks and lakes to enjoy the nice weather while watching traditional dragon boat races. This is the most iconic activity associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. Teams of paddlers, drummers, and steersmen work in unison to propel long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails. The races are both competitive and ceremonial, symbolizing the community's remembrance of Qu Yuan's tragic end and their collective spirit.

Other Dragon Boat Festival traditions include:

Food

The most iconic food associated with the Dragon Boat Festival is zòngzi (粽子), a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. Zongzi can be sweet or savory, with ingredients like red bean paste, dates, pork, or salted egg yolks. The preparation and sharing of zongzi is a crucial tradition, symbolizing the ancient offerings made to Qu Yuan.

Another traditional consumable is realgar wine (xiónghuáng jiǔ,, 雄黄酒), believed to ward off evil spirits and disease. It's often sprinkled around the house, particularly in the corners, to protect against insects and snakes.

Activities

To protect against evil spirits and diseases, people hang mugwort (ài hào, 艾蒿) and calamus (chāngpú, 菖蒲) around their doors and windows. These plants are believed to have medicinal properties and can ward off insects.

Another tradition is to wear scented sachets (xiāngnáng, 香囊). Children often wear perfumed sachets containing a mixture of herbs to fend off evil spirits and disease. These sachets are usually colorful and intricately designed, adding to the festive atmosphere.
