Earth Day in Chinese: Earth Day Chinese Words

Learn Chinese

Earth Day is celebrated around the world every year on April 22 as a day to promote environmental awareness, conservation, and sustainable living.

While Earth Day is a relatively new event in China, the idea of living in harmony with nature has deep roots in Chinese culture. In schools and communities across China, this day is often marked by tree-planting events, clean-up campaigns, and public education activities. Children learn about recycling, climate change, and protecting nature—often using phrases like: 护环境,从我做起。 (Bǎohù huánjìng, cóng wǒ zuò qǐ.) which means “Protecting the environment starts with me.” Some schools also invite environmental organizations to give talks, plant gardens, or install recycling bins on campus.

For children outside of China learning Mandarin, Earth Day offers a fun and meaningful way to learn Chinese vocabulary while developing eco-conscious habits. Let’s start with what this day is called. In Mandarin Chinese, Earth Day is called 世界地球日 (Shìjiè Dìqiú Rì). 世界 (shìjiè) means “world.” 地球 (dìqiú) means “earth.” 日 (rì) means “day.” Here are some ideas for celebrating Earth Day and learning Chinese.

Chinese Cultural Values and Earth Day

Though modern environmentalism is relatively recent, traditional Chinese culture has always included ideas that align with sustainable living. Concepts like 节约 (jiéyuē – frugality) and 物尽其用 (wù jìn qí yòng – make full use of everything) show the traditional respect for conserving resources and avoiding waste.

Traditional Chinese philosophy emphasizes the relationship between humans and nature. Ancient teachings from Taoism (道教 – Dàojiào) and Confucianism (儒家 – Rújiā) encourage people to live in balance with the natural world.

A famous Taoist idea is: 天人合一 (tiān rén hé yī). This phrase, “Harmony between Heaven and humanity,” expresses the belief that humans are part of nature, not separate from it. Another important idea is: 敬天爱地 (jìng tiān ài dì). It means “Respect Heaven, Love the Earth” which reflects a spiritual and moral responsibility to protect our environment. By teaching children these phrases and values, we help them connect language learning with cultural and environmental awareness.

For Chinese language learners, these principles can be introduced to children with simple stories and folk tales, making Earth Day not just a modern holiday, but a bridge to timeless wisdom.

Fun Earth Day Activities for Kids Learning Chinese

Here are some eco-friendly and educational activities to help children celebrate Earth Day while learning Mandarin Chinese:

  • Plant a Tree – 种树 (zhòng shù)

Take your child outside to plant a small tree or flower in the garden or a pot. As you work together, practice vocabulary like 泥土 (nítǔ – soil), 阳光 (yángguāng – sunlight), and 水 (shuǐ – water). You can even say this simple sentence: 我们一起种树。 (Wǒmen yìqǐ zhòng shù.) – “Let’s plant a tree together.”

  • Recycling Sort Game – 回收游戏 (huíshōu yóuxì)

Make a game out of sorting items into different recycling categories: paper (纸 – zhǐ), plastic (塑料 – sùliào), and metal (金属 – jīnshǔ). Label boxes in both English and Chinese to reinforce the vocabulary. Say together: 把纸放在这里。 (Bǎ zhǐ fàng zài zhèlǐ.) – “Put the paper here.”

  • Create Art from Recyclables – 环保艺术 (huánbǎo yìshù)

Turn old magazines, cartons, and boxes into creative crafts. While making art, practice the words 剪刀 (jiǎndāo – scissors), 胶水 (jiāoshuǐ – glue), and 颜色 (yánsè – colors). You can say: 我们在做环保艺术。 (Wǒmen zài zuò huánbǎo yìshù.) – “We’re making eco-friendly art.”

  • Go on a Nature Walk – 自然散步 (zìrán sànbù)

Take a walk in a park or natural area. Point out things in Chinese like:

  • 树 (shù) – tree

  • 花 (huā) – flower

  • 小鸟 (xiǎo niǎo) – little bird

  • 蝴蝶 (húdié) – butterfly

Turn it into a game: “Who can find three 绿色的东西 (lǜsè de dōngxi) – green things?”

  • Sing a Chinese Earth Day Song – 唱环保歌 (chàng huánbǎo gē)

Learning a simple song in Chinese about the earth or nature is a great way to reinforce vocabulary. Try changing the lyrics of familiar tunes like “Twinkle, Twinkle” to Mandarin phrases about Earth Day. For example: 地球,地球,我们爱你 (Dìqiú, dìqiú, wǒmen ài nǐ). This means “Earth, Earth, we love you!”  Looking for an online Chinese class for your kids to learn Mandarin and Chinese culture? LingoAce is one of the best ways for kids to learn Chinese online.
