Learn Chinese

Easter is a global Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, the extent of its observance and how it is celebrated vary widely from country to country and culture to culture. In predominantly Christian countries, such as many in Europe and the Americas, Easter is a major religious holiday celebrated with various traditions and customs. These may include church services, Easter egg hunts, family gatherings, and feasting.

Easter may still be observed in other parts of the world where Christianity is not the predominant religion. Still, its significance and the way it is celebrated can be pretty different. In some countries, Easter is primarily a secular holiday associated with the arrival of spring and may be celebrated with activities like egg decorating and gift-giving rather than religious observances.

Do Chinese people celebrate Easter?

Easter Day is not widely celebrated in Chinese-speaking countries, as the holiday is primarily of Christian significance, and Christianity is not the predominant religion in Asia. For reference, here is the Chinese calendar with holidays for 2024. However, in regions across the Asia Pacific and among overseas Chinese communities with significant Christian populations, Easter may be observed by some people, particularly those who are part of the Christian community.

Easter traditions in China

Easter is not widely recognized or celebrated in China as a religious holiday. However, some cities with a significant Christian population, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, may have Easter services and events organized by local churches. These events may include Easter Sunday worship services, Easter egg hunts, and other activities to commemorate the holiday. With significant Christian populations, regions like Hong Kong and Macau observe Easter with church services and secular activities such as Easter egg hunts. Despite not being a public holiday in Singapore, Easter is celebrated by the Christian community with church services and gatherings.

Other Asian countries with larger Christian communities have developed unique Easter traditions influenced by their own cultures or the presence of Christian communities. In the Philippines, for example, the observance of Holy Week, known as "Semana Santa," includes processions, reenactments of the Passion of Christ, and street plays called "Senakulo." South Korea sees the practice of the "Sunrise Service," where Christians gather at dawn on Easter Sunday to watch the sunrise and commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. In parts of India with Christian populations, Easter is celebrated with special church services, feasts, and sometimes Easter egg hunts. These traditions blend traditional Christian practices with local customs, creating a unique Easter experience in Asia.
