10 Games to Help Kids Learn Chinese Effectively

Learning Chinese can be fun and engaging when games are involved. Below are 10 creative and educational Chinese learning games, each with rules and examples, perfect for parents and kids to play together! 

 

1. Idiom Chain 

Rules:   

- One player says an idiom, and the next player must use the last character of the previous idiom to form a new idiom.   

- Idioms cannot be repeated. 

Example:   

- First player: “画龙点睛” (huà lóng diǎn jīng)   

- Second player: “睛明耳聪” (jīng míng ěr cōng)   

- Third player: “聪明才智” (cōng míng cái zhì) 

Suitable Age: 6 years and above

2. Word Chain 

Rules:   

- Similar to the idiom chain, but players can use any word, not just idioms.   

- For example, “apple” can lead to “juice,” and “juice” can lead to “liquid.” 

Example:   

- First player: “太阳” (tài yáng - sun)   

- Second player: “阳光” (yáng guāng - sunlight)   

- Third player: “光明” (guāng míng - brightness) 

Suitable Age: 5 years and above 

 

3. Picture Description 

Rules:   

- Parents show a picture and ask the child to describe it in full sentences.   

- Encourage the child to use their imagination to create a story or dialogue based on the picture. 

Example:   

If the picture shows a cat lying on grass, the child might say:   

“This is a cute cat. It is taking a nap under the sun.” 

Suitable Age: 4 years and above 

 

4. Pictionary with Chinese Characters 

Rules:   

- One player picks a Chinese character and draws it without writing any letters.   

- The other players try to guess the character based on the drawing. 

Example:   

- Keyword: “山” (shān - mountain) — Draw a tall mountain.   

- Keyword: “水” (shuǐ - water) — Draw a flowing river. 

Suitable Age: 6 years and above 

  

5. Poetry Chain (Chinese Poetry Idiom) 

Rules:   

- Choose a specific word (e.g., “spring”), and players take turns reciting a line from a poem containing that word.   

- Poems cannot be repeated. 

Example (with the word "春" for Spring):   

- “春眠不觉晓,处处闻啼鸟。” (chūn mián bù jué xiǎo, chù chù wén tí niǎo)   

- “两个黄鹂鸣翠柳,一行白鹭上青天。” (liǎng gè huáng lí míng cuì liǔ, yī xíng bái lù shàng qīng tiān)   

- “等闲识得东风面,万紫千红总是春。” (děng xián shí dé dōng fēng miàn, wàn zǐ qiān hóng zǒng shì chūn) 

Suitable Age: 8 years and above 

  

6. Chinese Character Decomposition 

Rules:   

- Parents give a Chinese character, and the child must break it down into components or form new words from it.   

- Players can compete to see who can form more words. 

Example (for the character “明”):   

- Decomposed components: “日” (sun) and “月” (moon)   

- New words: “明亮” (míng liàng - bright), “聪明” (cōng míng - smart), “明天” (míng tiān - tomorrow) 

Suitable Age: 6 years and above 

 

7. Sentence Construction Chain 

Rules:   

- Choose a theme (e.g., “school”), and the first player constructs a sentence based on that theme. The next player must expand on the sentence.   

Example (Theme: School):   

- First player: “我喜欢上学。” (wǒ xǐ huān shàng xué - I like going to school.)   

- Second player: “我喜欢上学,因为可以和朋友一起玩。” (wǒ xǐ huān shàng xué, yīn wèi kě yǐ hé péng yǒu yī qǐ wán - I like going to school because I can play with my friends.)   

- Third player: “我喜欢上学,因为可以和朋友一起玩,还能学到很多新知识。” (wǒ xǐ huān shàng xué, yīn wèi kě yǐ hé péng yǒu yī qǐ wán, hái néng xué dào hěn duō xīn zhī shì - I like going to school because I can play with my friends and also learn a lot of new knowledge.) 

Suitable Age: 5 years and above 

 

8. Chinese Idiom Fill-in-the-Blanks 

Rules:   

- Provide an idiom with missing characters, and the child must fill in the blanks.   

- Parents can provide clues, such as images or word meanings. 

Example (Blank Filling):   

- 亡()补牢 (wáng ___ bǔ láo - Fixing something after it’s broken) — Answer: “羊” (yáng)   

- ()然大悟 (___ rán dà wù - Suddenly realizing) — Answer: “恍” (huǎng) 

Suitable Age: 7 years and above 

 

9. Tongue Twister Challenge 

Rules:   

- Choose a tongue twister, and see who can say it the fastest and most clearly.   

- Children can also try making their own tongue twisters. 

Example:   

“吃葡萄不吐葡萄皮,不吃葡萄倒吐葡萄皮。” (chī pú táo bù tǔ pú táo pí, bù chī pú táo dào tǔ pú táo pí - Eat grapes but don't spit the skins, don’t eat grapes but spit the skins.) 

Suitable Age: 5 years and above 

 

10. Chinese Character Word Formation 

Rules:   

- Pick a Chinese character, and players take turns forming different words with it.   

- Players are eliminated if they cannot come up with a new word. 

Example (Character: “火”):   

- First player: “火车” (huǒ chē - train)   

- Second player: “火山” (huǒ shān - volcano)   

- Third player: “火焰” (huǒ yàn - flame)   

- Fourth player: “火锅” (huǒ guō - hotpot) 

Suitable Age: 6 years and above
