Learn Chinese

Chinese girls have fair skin, big eyes, and are beautiful and charming. In Gemaf village in the central part of Hamahira Island, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, Sally (pseudonym), a first-year junior high school student, told Southern Finance and Economics reporters about her understanding of Chinese girls. She is eager to learn Chinese and hopes to have the opportunity to travel to China. Sally is full of curiosity about China, and this emotion largely stems from the close and friendly relationship between China and Indonesia.

Recently, reporters from Southern Finance and Economics went to Indonesia for on-site visits and reports, with their first stop at Menado located in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. It is worth mentioning that the flight taken by the reporter was the first flight from Guangzhou to Menado, marking the return of Chinese tourists to Indonesia, a world-class tourist destination, except for Bali. Still on the plane, the reporter had already felt the enthusiasm of the Indonesian people, and a "water gate" ceremony was held on the flight. Before entering the airport lobby, Miss Menado presented flowers and scarves similar to "Hada" to the passengers on behalf of the Indonesian people, which was a welcoming etiquette to guests who came from afar. The airport staff warmly greeted Chinese tourists in Chinese, making people feel warm. Some APP signs at the airport also have Chinese signs, providing convenience for tourists.

Although Indonesian is still the main official language, with the deepening of communication between China and Indonesia, more and more Indonesians are learning Chinese. Dai Wei, who is currently working as a Chinese translator at China Electric Power Construction Seventh Bureau, is one of them. As a post-95s, Dai Wei studied abroad in China for three years, specializing in learning Chinese. Currently, she has been working at China Electric Power Construction for five years. She told reporters that her daily job is to translate the Chinese and Indonesian languages for Electric Power Construction, and her previous work mainly focused on the iconic project of the Jakarta Bandung high-speed railway jointly built by China and Indonesia. During the construction process of high-speed rail projects, we often face many communication and coordination issues, and language barriers have always been the biggest obstacle for us to communicate with the Indonesian people. Dai Wei has become a bridge for communication between Chinese engineering personnel and local villagers, using her language advantage to explain their doubts and eliminate their concerns. This has also to some extent enhanced the trust of local villagers in her Chinese company.

With the continuous strengthening of economic and trade cooperation between China and Indonesia, talents who understand Chinese have become popular in Indonesia. During the visit, the reporter found that many Chinese Indonesians were able to express and communicate fluently in Chinese. With this advantage, they are playing an increasingly important role in their daily work. Zheng Yongxing works in the Weidabe Industrial Park in Indonesia and is the third-generation Chinese in Indonesia. He told reporters that his family has been demanding that he learn Chinese since middle school. Every time after class, when his classmates go to play, he also goes to a tutoring class to learn Chinese. It was not until he grew up, especially after work, that he deeply realized the good intentions of his parents at that time.

In the daily work of the park, Zheng Yongxing's ability to speak Chinese fluently has played an important role. He told reporters that many positions, especially technical positions, require guidance from Chinese technical personnel. In this process, Zheng Yongxing needs to use his proficient Chinese and Indonesian to translate the technical guidance of Chinese personnel, act as a "bridge" for information transmission, and help the park complete production tasks. Wu Shuichun, who works in the Qingshan Park and is also the third generation of Indonesian Chinese, has experienced the benefits of understanding Chinese in his daily work and life. Because she understands Chinese, she can assist park employees in communicating with surrounding villagers and better participate in park personnel management. At the same time, she established deep friendships with the Chinese employees around her.

Wu Shuichun told reporters that her two children are also currently learning Chinese. She stated that although she is able to communicate in Chinese on a daily basis, her reading and writing abilities are still limited, and she hopes that her child can learn Chinese more systematically. More importantly, she hopes to cultivate children's sense of belonging to Chinese culture through learning Chinese. She said, "We are Indonesian, our home is in Indonesia, but our 'roots' are in China. Learning Chinese not only helps children better understand their ancestral country, but also prepares them for the opportunities they may face as Chinese in the future."
