If your child is learning Chinese, “you” seems like it should be the easy part. Then the textbook or app shows:
你好 (nǐ hǎo)
您好 (nín hǎo)
Same English meaning (hello). Two versions of “you”.For adults, that’s interesting. For kids, it can be confusing:
Do I say 你 or 您 to my teacher?
What about grandparents?
Will I sound rude if I choose the wrong one?
Most “you in Chinese” guides explain 你 / 您 / 你们 quickly, give a handful of sentences, and move on. For kids, that usually isn’t enough. They need lots of ready-made, real-life phrases they can copy and reuse. So this article flips the usual approach:
Instead of heavy grammar, we give you 100 kid-friendly sentencesusing 你, 您, and 你们 across real situations: family, school, New Year, public places, games, and more.
You’ll see a mix of paragraphs, bullet lists, and tables, so it’s easy to scan and print. Along the way, we’ll also point out how interactive programs like LingoAce help kids practice these “you” phrases in real conversations, not just on paper.
1. Tiny Rules First: 你, 您, 你们
Before we dive into 100 phrases, your child only needs a few simple ideas:
Character | Pinyin | Meaning | Use with… |
你 | nǐ | you (singular, casual) | Friends, classmates, siblings, kids the same age |
您 | nín | you (singular, polite) | Teachers, older relatives, adults you don’t know well |
你们 | nǐmen | you (plural “you all”) | A group: a table of kids, a class, the whole family |
And one more important point:
There is no standard “您们 (nínmen)” in modern Mandarin. Kids just need 您 for one polite person, and 你们 for a group in general.
A simple “house rule” can help:
Teachers + older relatives = 您 (nín)
Friends + siblings + classmates = 你 (nǐ)
Now let’s let the sentences do the real teaching.

2. Talking to Family and Friends: Everyday 你 (1–20)
We’ll start with the easiest place to practice: at home and with friends. In these situations, 你 (nǐ) is the default.
2.1 Greetings & Small Talk (1–10)
你好! Nǐ hǎo! – Hi! / Hello!
你好吗? Nǐ hǎo ma? – How are you?
你今天怎么样? Nǐ jīntiān zěnmeyàng? – How are you today?
你在做什么? Nǐ zài zuò shénme? – What are you doing?
你去哪儿? Nǐ qù nǎr? – Where are you going?
你家在哪儿? Nǐ jiā zài nǎr? – Where do you live? / Where is your home?
你几岁? Nǐ jǐ suì? – How old are you? (for kids)
你饿吗? Nǐ è ma? – Are you hungry?
你累了吗? Nǐ lèi le ma? – Are you tired?
你生气了吗? Nǐ shēngqì le ma? – Are you angry?
These ten alone can cover a lot of sibling and playground talk.
2.2 Likes, Favorites, and “What Do You Like?” (11–20)
A quick table helps kids see the pattern “你 + 喜欢 + …”:
Chinese | Pinyin | English | |
11 | 你喜欢什么? | Nǐ xǐhuan shénme? | What do you like? |
12 | 你喜欢吃什么? | Nǐ xǐhuan chī shénme? | What do you like to eat? |
13 | 你喜欢喝什么? | Nǐ xǐhuan hē shénme? | What do you like to drink? |
14 | 你喜欢玩什么游戏? | Nǐ xǐhuan wán shénme yóuxì? | What games do you like to play? |
15 | 你喜欢看什么动画片? | Nǐ xǐhuan kàn shénme dònghuàpiàn? | What cartoons do you like to watch? |
16 | 你喜欢听什么音乐? | Nǐ xǐhuan tīng shénme yīnyuè? | What music do you like to listen to? |
17 | 你最喜欢的颜色是什么? | Nǐ zuì xǐhuan de yánsè shì shénme? | What’s your favorite color? |
18 | 你最喜欢的动物是什么? | Nǐ zuì xǐhuan de dòngwù shì shénme? | What’s your favorite animal? |

20 | 你喜欢中文课吗? | Nǐ xǐhuan Zhōngwén kè ma? | Do you like Chinese class? |
These are very close to what you’ll see in beginner kids’ textbooks—just collected here under the “you in Chinese” theme.

When a child is brave enough to ask sentence 100, it means they’re starting to use Chinese as a real communication tool, not just something to fill in on a worksheet.
8. For Parents: Let the Sentences Do the Teaching
One hundred sentences looks like a lot on paper, but you don’t have to teach them all at once. You can:
Pick one theme per week – “classroom,” “New Year,” “playground,” “public places.”
Stick a small phrase card on the fridge for family/holiday phrases.
Put a “lesson phrases” table next to the computer for online classes.
Ask your child to choose 2–3 new sentences to try in the next LingoAce lesson or school day.
The goal isn’t to memorize everything. The goal is to let kids hear and use you-phrases repeatedly in real situations. That’s also why many families lean on live, interactive platforms like LingoAce:
Kids meet the same 你 / 您 / 你们 patterns in stories, games, and role-plays.
Teachers gently model “你 for friends, 您 for teachers and elders” without long grammar explanations.
Phrases like “老师,您可以再说一遍吗?” or “您觉得我读得怎么样?” show up again and again, until they feel natural.
If you want your child to explore more knowledge through Chinese, you can book a free trial lesson with LingoAce.
