What Role Does Chinese Composition Play in the PSLE Chinese Subject?
The Primary School Leaving Examination or PSLE, is a critical national examination taken by al Primary 6 students in Singapore that is taken at the end of your child's primary school education. The PSLE national exam also determines the future secondary school and course (e.g. Express, Normal Academic, Normal Technical) your child attends. Notably, the PSLE underwent a significant transformation with the introduction of the New AL (Achievement Level) Scoring System. Under the new system, the mark range for each Achievement level (AL) is distributed more evenly. For example, a score of 75 would amount to an “A” grade in the old T-score, but an AL score of 4 in the new AL system.
The AL PSLE scoring system places an equal emphasise on each subject in the PSLE. This shift will mean that students will have to focus on scoring well across all four subjects, including their mother tongue. This places a more direct importance of the Chinese language towards your child’s final PSLE score.
Should my Child choose Scenario-based Essays (命题作文) or Picture Essays (看图作文) During Exam?
Within the PSLE Chinese examination, the Chinese Composition Paper 1 makes up 20% of the total marks allocation. In particular, the Chinese Composition section offers students a choice between two types: Scenario-based Essays (命题作文) or Picture Essays (看图作文).
When deciding between Scenario-based Essays (命题作文) and Picture Essays (看图作文) for the PSLE Chinese examination, there is no definitive right or wrong answer. The key is to choose the option that resonates best with your child's individual preferences and strengths. This flexibility empowers students to showcase their creativity and linguistic skills in a way that aligns with their unique abilities.

The importance of building a solid foundation in Chinese Early
The significance of building a solid foundation in Chinese education cannot be overstated, and this holds particularly true when considering the transition from lower primary to upper primary Chinese Writing. Lower primary education serves as the bedrock, laying the essential groundwork to communicate effectively in Chinese. In terms of the number of characters one is expected to learn, the number remains low at about 300-350 characters per year. However, as students' progress to upper primary levels, the learning outcomes become more nuanced and intricate with higher order skills and stronger vocabulary usage requirements.
Vocabulary wise, the number of new words learnt in upper primary more than doubles, while having the need to understand subtle context, audience and expression of opinions.
The curriculum's increasing complexity is coupled with the challenge of having lesser time for Chinese school learning with the introduction of the Science language from Primary 3 onwards, creating an environment where students must grasp advanced concepts swiftly. With a strong foundation established in the lower primary years, students are better equipped to navigate the heightened demands of upper primary education, fostering a journey of continuous growth and academic success.
