This year, Singapore celebrates its 60th birthday — SG60! The National Day Parade (NDP) is more than just a show; it’s a heartfelt reminder of our shared dreams and pride. Over the years, many iconic National Day songs have become deeply rooted in our hearts, especially when performed in Chinese.

Let’s revisit some of the most unforgettable Chinese NDP Songs, perfect for families who want to bond and learn Chinese together this National Day.

1. Kit Chan: 《家》(Home) — 1998

We can’t talk about National Day songs without mentioning "Home." First released in 1998, 《家》(Jiā) has been voted as Singapore's most loved National Day song many times. Kit Chan’s gentle yet powerful voice brings out the warmth of belonging. While not directly written for a single crisis, it resonated deeply during a period of regional economic uncertainty (Asian Financial Crisis) and expressed a heartfelt longing for warmth and belonging. It reminds Singaporeans that no matter what challenges arise, Singapore is always 'home.

Why we love it: The song embodies the feeling of home and unity, making it a great way for kids to learn the word 家 (jiā), meaning home.

🎵 Lyric snippet: “这是我永远的家” Zhè shì wǒ yǒngyuǎn de jiā This is my forever home.

The song was created to celebrate the sense of identity and belonging as Singapore entered a new millennium. It expresses a deep sense of gratitude for having a place that accepts and shelters us — a city we can always call home, no matter where we are. In 2020, it was beautifully reinterpreted by a youth choir, showing its timeless charm.

🎵 Lyric snippet: “这里是我属于的地方” Zhèlǐ shì wǒ shǔyú de dìfāng This is the place where I belong. Why we love it: Teaches children the word 属于 (shǔyú, belong) — a meaningful term to express identity.
