Primary 1 Registration: How to Choose The Right Primary School for Your Child
The annual Primary 1 Registration Exercise will be beginning from the 1st of July onwards and this marks the beginning of formal education for your child in Singapore. Hence, it is important to choose the right primary school for their child, and weigh the various factors to consider while doing so. Today, we are here to discuss not only how to choose the right primary school, but also give a detailed step-by-step process and key information to guide you through the process in transitioning from preschool to primary school.
1. Research and Shortlist Primary Schools In Your Area
To find the most suitable primary school for your child, start by understanding your child’s interests, strengths, weaknesses, needs for Mother Tongue support, and most importantly, commute convenience. Research the primary schools in your neighborhood, focusing on their values, past work, and achievements. After which, create a shortlist of schools and evaluate them against your child's capabilities and talents, by ensuring that the school environment matches your child's potential and provides necessary support and opportunities. A useful tool for this step is the MOE SchoolFinder, which provides useful information on all government schools in Singapore, including subjects offered, special programmes, Co-Curricular activities and more!
2. Attending School Open Houses If You Have Time
Alternatively, given that you have time, attending primary school open houses is an invaluable step in gathering comprehensive information to make an informed decision about your child's education. These events provide a firsthand look at the school's environment, facilities, and resources, allowing you to assess whether they align with your child's needs and interests. During the open house, you can interact with teachers, staff, and current students, gaining insights into the school's culture, values, and teaching methods.
Additionally, open houses often showcase extracurricular activities and support services, helping you determine if the school offers opportunities that cater to your child's strengths and areas for growth. By attending multiple open houses, you can compare different schools and make a well-rounded choice that best suits your child's educational journey.

3. Check Past Vacancies and Balloting Statistics
Checking past vacancies and balloting statistics is also a crucial step in gauging the demand for specific primary schools. By reviewing these figures, you can identify which schools are highly sought after and understand the competition level for admission. High demand may indicate a school's strong reputation and desirable programs, but it also means more challenging admission processes. Conversely, schools with lower demand might offer easier entry and more personalized attention.
Analyzing these statistics helps you make strategic decisions, balancing your child's needs and the likelihood of securing a spot. This approach ensures you choose a school that not only fits your child's profile but also increases their chances of successful enrollment. Do note that distance is also an important factor in balloting.
4. Are All Schools Really Good Schools?
As our DPM Heng Swee Keat has mentioned before, “Every School a Good School”. All primary schools provide a solid educational foundation, and the ultimate determinant of your child's future success is the growth, support, and opportunities they receive.
Each school offers unique strengths and environments that cater to different talents and needs and we should never pigeon hole our child’s measure of success using grades as a primary determinant. It's essential to choose a school that aligns with your child's interests and abilities, ensuring they receive the encouragement and resources necessary to thrive and learn! With that said, let us dive into some useful key information to help with your P1 registration exercise.

P2 Review – What Parents Are Saying
🌟 "As a parent with a teaching background myself, I have a lot of students who I had to counsel over the years who found Chinese very challenging and thereafter wanted to drop to basic Chinese.
Hence, I have one key criterion: my children’s Mandarin learning experience should be enjoyable instead of being academic driven. I personally believe that it is important that my kids enjoy learning Chinese because then there is no need for me to push them as they will be motivated to continue to do well on their own." – Mrs Tay, Parent of Ellaryne, P2
